The busy season is underway for Barnabas Turk and his family.

This marks the 20th spring planting season with Turk as owner of Turk's Greenhouses in unincorporated Lake County near Grayslake. Turk operates the growing greenhouse operation with wife, Claudia; stepmother Danica Turk and daughter Anna Turk.

Bedding plants and perennials are the focus of the business. Every item sold is grown on the Turk property.

Barnabas Turk emigrated from Hungary when he was 21. He came to the United States to meet his father and stepmother for the first time. He finished his schooling in Hungary and worked in a greenhouse there before coming to the United States.

He first worked in landscaping to save money to purchase the land on Route 60 just past Peterson Road, according to his daughter, Anna.

When he first bought the land, there was one existing greenhouse. The family business is 10 times larger now. In addition to the five acres for greenhouses, the Turks own another 40 acres nearby where additional planting is done.

"My father works really hard," said Anna, 21.

Her early memories of the family business involve getting off the school bus and then helping out in the greenhouses. "I really enjoy plants and seeing them grow," she said.

She said Turks has been identified as one of the best places in Lake County to buy geraniums. The business caters to a diverse customer base including residents and landscapers from around the suburbs.
